You cannot write a tourism blog about Delmarva without mentioning craft breweries. There are 32 craft breweries in Delaware alone. It is an important industry and an integral part of Delmarva’s tourist industry. Consequently, I try to visit one or two breweries a month. This month it was the turn of Revelation Craft Brewing Company in Georgetown, DE.
Revelation is one of Delaware’s craft beer success stories. I visited their main location in Georgetown. But they actually began in Rehoboth, where they still have a storefront. Revelation was founded by Patrick Staggs (the chief brewer), and Kyle Shaffer in 2016. Its location in Rehoboth, near the Junction & Breakwater Trail, made it popular among cyclists and beachgoers. In 2018 they purchased the 16 Mile Brewing Company facility in Georgetown. They made extensive renovations to that property and reopened in September 2023. Staggs has spent years developing his brewing skills, and he emphasizes technical precision with experimentation. Revelation has a broad, innovation-driven brewing style producing almost all beer styles from American IPAs, to German lagers, Belgian ales, porters, and stouts.
I wasn’t much of a beer drinker when I started this journey, but as I have progressed through Delmarva’s craft brewing industry my tastes have become more sophisticated. I had been over to Lewes doing some shopping, and I had resolved to stop at Revelation for lunch and a beer. It was one of the first truly hot days of the season, so I was ready for a nice cold beer.
I arrived just a little after noon, and though we were well into tourist season, I was the only patron. I sat at the bar and immediately struck up a conversation with the very friendly bartender. I decided to order a flight of four beers, as this was my first visit to Revelation. On this particular day they were serving 18 beer varieties. Not knowing what to choose, I called the bartender over and she gave me a rundown of all the beers on offer. I wanted a representative sample of their beers so, with the bartender’s help, I ordered the hefeweizen, the mule (a blonde), the Munich Dunkel (Lager), and the Nitro (Irish Stout). I ordered a chicken parmesan sandwich from the outside food truck, which the bartender volunteered to retrieve for me.
Revelation claims to serve food at the Georgetown location, but the food is actually prepared by an unaffiliated food truck vendor. The sandwich was OK, but I was not impressed. As for the beers, my favorite was the Mule. It had a refreshing citrusy undertone which was welcome on a hot summer’s day. As for the dark beers, I liked both, but my favorite was the dunkel. It had a rich chocolatey malt flavor.
In the end, I enjoyed Revelation. The service was great, they make lovely satisfying beers. But I was not impressed with the food. I would definitely go back, but only for the beer. They had several other beers I would like to try.
