Over the last decade, there have been multiple restaurants at this location. But it is this iteration that has truly caught my imagination. Sisters with a Twist is about fulfilling a dream, putting one’s best foot forward, and rising from the ashes. I am a sucker for this type of story.
Sisters with a Twist was opened, just across the street from the Washington Hotel, by cousins Amanda Roth and Wendy Penn. Amanda and Wendy started their culinary journey by opening a lemonade stand on the Jersey shore when they were children. From an early age they had a dream to open a bakery. They chose Princess Anne as the location of their bakery because they appreciated Princess Anne’s strong sense of community and they wanted to be a part of the revitalization of Princess Anne’s historic downtown. Their mission is to produce food that brings joy to customers in a welcoming atmosphere of baked goods and comfort foods.
I had just finished a hike on the Pusey Branch Trail. I was tired, hot, and hungry and ready for lunch. I had resolved to visit Sisters on many occasions, but unfortunately for them, they are across the street from Sugar Water, one of my favorite restaurants. Up until this point, every time I had resolved to try Sisters, I would always turn left into Sugar Water. But this time, I was resolved to eat at Sisters.
It wasn’t even 11:30 when I arrived and the place was already packed. Which is always a good sign, but it left me with no place sit. They are a bakery, so the lunch menu is limited, which isn’t a bad thing. When it comes to restaurants doing a few things well, is far better than doing many things poorly. Even though the menu is limited, they had a chicken salad sandwich, which is one of my favorite sandwiches, so I ordered it. Wendy happened to be behind the counter when I ordered. The cashier asked if I was eating in or out. I told her that I had planned to eat in, but there were no seats. Wendy turned around and said, “give me a minute, I’ll set up a table for you by the window.”
She quickly set up a table and offered me a seat, shortly after my sandwich arrived. It was a generous helping of chicken salad on a warm kaiser, with lettuce and tomato. They add grapes to their chicken salad, which in my view is a match made in heaven. The salad was a perfect combination of salad, chicken, and grapes. It was so good I ate it before I realized I forgot to take a picture, something I never do.
Sisters is not just a restaurant. It is a story about fulfilling a dream, living your passion, and rising from the ashes, all while providing an excellent product and warm hospitality. I didn’t just enjoy a meal here, by the time I left, found myself rooting for their success.
