I noticed this restaurant a few months ago when I went to Brimming Horn Meadery, it is just across the street. I have been on a mission to sample good Latin American cuisine on the peninsula, so I made a mental note to do a bit of detective work on this restaurant, and visit it the next time I was in Seaford.
Sabor con Amor (Flavor with Love) was opened in 2021. It was one of several immigrant-owned restaurants that opened in Seaford in the early 20s. The restaurant has a broad Latin American culinary influence offering dishes from the Caribbean, Central America and Mexico. The cuisine is authentic homestyle made-from-scratch dishes offered in a casual, and welcoming no-frills atmosphere.

When we lived in Australia, one of the things I missed most about America was the strong undercurrent of Latin culture. When we moved to Delmarva, I wasn’t expecting to find a large Latin presence here, so I was surprised by the large number of Latin restaurants. A quick search on Google showed this restaurant received rave reviews, so I was looking forward to my next visit to Seaford.
I had planned a tour of Seaford Museum, which opens at 1:00, so I decided to arrive an hour early and have lunch at Sabor con Amor. When I walked in, the restaurant was completely empty, not only were there no customers, there were no workers. Suddenly, a very charming woman burst through the back door, and even though it was noon, she seemed a bit surprised to see me standing there.

She sat me down, and handed me a three-page menu. Two of the pages contained the usual list of tacos, burritos, fajitas…not that interesting. But on the first page there were two columns of dishes I had never heard of before. When the waitress came back, I pointed to the first page and said, “I never heard of any of these dishes, which would you recommend?” She recommended the piononos, which is a traditional dish from Puerto Rico. It consists of hamburger, topped with cheese and wrapped in plantain. I ordered the piononos and a side of rice and salad.

I don’t think I have ever eaten a plantain, at least I don’t remember it, so I had no idea what I would get or whether or not I would like it. While I was waiting for the main, she brought out an excellent homemade nachos and salsa, which was welcome portent of things to come. As for the piononos, the waitress was right, it was an excellent introduction to the cuisine of Puerto Rico. The sweetness of the plantain made an excellent contrast with the lightly seasoned hamburger and cheese.
If you want the familiar dishes offered by Mexican restaurants, you have many choices, but if you want an authentic homestyle Latin American meal Sabor con Amor should be on your short list. I would rate it one of the best Latin American restaurants in the area. My meal was memorable.
What else is there to do in Seaford?
