Rosita’s Taqueria, Princess Anne, MD

Mark’s Score   8.6

While having lunch at Caesar’s, I noticed Rosita’s Taqueria right next door.  I had been meaning to give it a try, I had heard good things about it, but it had just slipped my mind. I resolved that the next time I was in Princess Anne, I would have lunch at Rosita’s.

This restaurant has been around for a while, at least six years. Because it is close to UMES it is popular on campus. Rosita’s sets itself apart in that it is not Tex-Mex but instead specializes in traditional Mexican street-food. Their mission is to provide authentic Mexican homestyle food with an emphasis on flavor, freshness, and traditional recipes of Mexican everyday cooking. In short, this is the real deal.

Whatever the cuisine, I am a big believer in authenticity. If I am going to eat Mexican, I want it to be like the food I would get in Mexico City, and not food that has been Americanized for the local pallet. From the moment I walked into the place, I fell in love. They claim that their emphasis is on the food, not décor. But the moment you walk in you are hit square in the face with the bold bright colors of Mexico. In the background authentic Mexican music is playing. It was a cold rainy day, and walking through the doors was like walking from cold dower Maryland to bright sunny Mexico.

I was alone, so I sat at the bar. I asked for a menu and the very charming bartender handed me a book of Mexican dishes, many of which I had never heard of before. When I rate restaurants, I look for innovative and unique menus. I don’t want to find the same dishes everywhere I eat. I want something special, and this menu was pages of dishes entirely new to me. I had no idea what to order, so I just opened the menu to a page and pointed to a random item on the menu.  I had randomly selected a steak dish, so I had no idea what I was going to get.  Sometimes it is fun to just roll the dice and see what happens.

What I got was a beef steak smothered in onions, herbs, and a halapeño. Accompanied with Spanish rice and the best refried beans I have ever had. I wish I had remembered to take a picture of the menu, so could recall the name of the dish. But I guess it doesn’t matter because I will probably just pick something at random the next time I go to Rosita’s.

I would not rate this as the best Mexican food I have ever had. There are many excellent Mexican restaurants in this country. But it is the best Mexican I have eaten in this area. If you want the usual Mexican fair, there are many restaurants that can fulfill your need. But if you want to try something uniquely authentic, Rosita’s is the place to go.

What else is there to do in Princess Anne?

  1. Did you try the chips and salsa? They literally use Pace picante or Tostitos, definitely not authentic which always sets my meal off to a weird start when in a restaurant like this. We have been here multiple times and my s/o always has a better take on it than I do. I prefer the tiny place next to Family Dollar called La Morenita. Now that is what I think of when I think Mexican street food! Try that place and compare!

    1. Thank you for the suggestion. I will give it a try.
