For those of us who regularly drive on Rte. 50 have been watching a construction site just east of Hebron for months. It wasn’t too long into construction that it became apparent that the establishment would be a farmer’s market of some type. The obvious green houses in the back made it certain that the business model would be similar to How Sweet It Is, part garden center, part grocery store. As the project progressed, it was apparent that there would be a café as well.
Owners John and Erica Tilghman call Tidal Roots a “destination garden center and happy place.” In addition to plants and the café, Tidal Roots stocks gourmet foods items, soaps, meats, charcuterie, kitchen items, and even wine. At first, I wasn’t sure what they meant by “destination garden center.” But then it occurred to me that the location provides a hint. Tidal Roots is located on the westbound lanes of Rte 50 just beyond the first traffic lights after the 65 MPH section of Rte. 50. It is also about 40 minutes west of Ocean City, so it is an excellent location to capture the returning tourist looking for one more memorable vacation experience. The eclectic mix of goods also makes it “a unique destination.”

I visited the store for the first time about a week ago. I needed some flowers for my porch flower pots. I usually buy my plants at How Sweet it Is, but I like to patronize new businesses so I thought I would give Tidal Roots a try. I am glad I did.

I did buy some bluebells for the back porch and I can report that they are thriving. But for me, the plants are not the main draw of Tidal Roots. Working for Bordeleau Winery I often make trips up to their St Michaels tasting room. They are located just across the street from the Village Shoppe (see review). For my money, Village Shoppe has the best butchery on the Eastern Shore, so I was delighted to find that Tidal Roots sells Village Shop meats. I no longer have to drive all the way to St Michaels to get quality meat. The fact that they also carry wine is a strong positive. One of the weirdest things about living in Salisbury is that you can only buy wine at gas stations or at the county dispensaries. “What does county government know about wine,” you ask? Nothing.

All these things are a wonderful surprise, but what really had me cock-a-hoop were their specialty food items. They carry Bourbon Barrel Aged Worcestershire Sauce. Once you try this Worcestershire sauce you will never go back to the supermarket brands. They also sold fig stuffed gnocchi. I have never tasted anything like it before. By far, the best gnocchi I have ever had.

So, is Tidal Roots a destination garden center that makes me happy? It is. If you are a foody, the opening of a good providore is always something to celebrate.
