No town is complete without a decent kosher deli. Life without corned beef, pastrami, brisket, latkes, pumpernickel, and kugel is a life not worth living. How can you even claim to have lived without ever having eaten a corned beef or brisket Reuben? It is certainly no life I would want to have lived.
Rosenfeld’s Jewish Deli is locally owned and run by Warren Rosenfeld. Warren opened his first Jewish Deli in Ocean City in 2013. At the time, it was the only Jewish deli within a two-hour drive and it quickly became a local and tourist favorite. Rosenfeld’s became so popular up and down the shore that Warren opened two additional stores in Bethany and Rehoboth Beaches. In a catastrophe for Ocean City, Rosenfeld’s closed their Ocean City location last spring. But Ocean City’s loss was Salisbury’s gain, as Rosenfeld’s opened a new store here in Salisbury last October. Note: There are reports that they will soon open a store in a new location in Ocean City this coming spring.

A brisket sandwich covered with deli mustard on rye is one of life’s great pleasures, and Rosenfeld’s did not disappoint. I have to say though, I was not impressed with their chicken soup. How can you claim to be a first-class Jewish Deli without a smashing chicken soup? But no matter, I am chalking it up to growing pains. The service was very slow on this occasion, but given the long lines, I will give them a pass on that issue, at least for now.
Christmas and Hannukah are coming so I have my eye on an order of latkes with sour cream and applesauce. And how can you call it the holiday season without kugel, knish, blintzes, and Jewish Apple Cake? Then there is Rosenfeld specialty, their one-pound éclair.

Most years we traditionally order Chinese for Christmas Eve. Given that Hannukah starts on Boxing Day we will make this Christmas Eve a celebration of Jewish Deli food. I’ll get the Rosenfeld’s Jewish sampler, plus an order of latkes, and the Jewish Apple Cake. We always make Eggs Benedict on Christmas morning. This year, instead of Canadian bacon, I am going to make the Eggs Benedict with Rosenfeld’s corned beef. I am told that the third Wiseman brought a plate of Latkes with the Frankincense to the first Christmas.
