Mark’s Score 9.1

Shopping is not really my thing, but if you are at the beach on a cold rainy day you have to do something. If you like to shop, Berlin is going to offer you more interesting opportunities than other towns on the shore.
Though I am not a big shopper, I do enjoy cooking. In fact, one of my retirement projects is to improve my cooking skills by methodically making every dish in the dozen or so cookbooks I own. When I worked, I had little time to prepare complicated dishes, so I am using the extra time in my retirement years to become a better chef.
As I started my culinary quest, I realized that my kitchen was woefully equipped for the task. I could have gone to Amazon. But I decided to marry my two retirement projects, cooking and writing a travel blog, which brought me to the door of Relish Décor in Berlin. Relish’s mission is to curate uncommon kitchen items, providing a unique shopping experience. They populate their shop with collections from up-and-coming designers and exclusive national brands. In short, they are positioning themselves to successfully compete with the digital market place. You shop at Relish precisely because they offer a unique shopping experience. An experience you cannot get on the net.

The last time I walked in to Relish, I wasn’t looking for anything in particular, but it being Christmas time, I am always looking for stocking stuffers. If I were to describe Relish, I would describe it as a local version of Williams Sonoma. They sell a combination of high-end food preparation equipment, specialty foods, dishes, cookware, serving bowls, and cookbooks. It being Christmas time, they also had a variety of Christmas themed candy, decorations, and Christmas specialty foods.
I do not like pushy sales people, but I do like a sales person to be readily available (and knowledgeable) if I should have questions. I was the only customer on this particular day and the young saleswoman was the perfect sales person. She stayed out of my way, until I had a question, and when I did have a question, she was informed about the products she was selling

I hadn’t intended to buy anything in particular, but I did walk out of the store with items that will go a long way to making my cooking adventure more enjoyable. I have a French Cookbook, a good many of the recipes in that book calls for julienne vegetables and I found a handheld julienne slicer. I am also learning to bake so I bought a silicon spreader. Finally, I bought Bee’s Wrap reusable food storage wraps. It is actually made out of bee’s wax and it is meant to be a replacement for plastic wrap. I had no idea such a thing existed. OK so I didn’t walk out with many stocking stuffers, but I am now better equipped to cook for the holidays.
